Safety switches are used to detect current leakage from faulty switches, wiring or electrical appliances. Basically, safety switches monitor the flow of electricity through a circuit and quickly switch off the electricity, minimising electric shock and reducing the risk of fire. This reduces the risk of a person getting electroculated due to current flowing to earth through that person.
There are three types of approved safety switches, which are as follows:
-Switchboard safety switch
-Power point safety switches
- Portable safety switches
1. Switchboard safety switches is capable of protecting electrical circuits connected throughout the house, and for those electrical appliances and extension cords connected to earth leakage protected power points.
2. Power point safety switches are used to protect extension cords and electrical appliances plugged into the outlet. In addition, It is used to protect the electrical wiring and power points downstream from the safety switch on the same circuit.
3. Portable safety switches protect portable electrical appliances and extension cords plugged into the safety switch. If using power tools or electrical appliances outdoors that are not protected by a switchboard or power point safety switch, these safety switches are essential.
